The Missoula Folklore Society is a Montana 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation. The activities of the Missoula Folklore Society rely on our dedicated membership. Members donate thousands of volunteer hours each year to help produce our events and enrich our cultural community.

MFS events include contra dances, square dancing, concerts, music jam sessions, shape-note singing, international dances and most anything within our mission in which members are interested and willing to organize. We welcome singles and couples to our bi-weekly Contra Dances, October through May. All dances are taught from scratch, no experience (or partner) is necessary, although it's helpful to know your "right" from your "left." But if you don't, come anyway! Contra dances feature live music and are held regularly on the first and third Saturday of each month, October through May, on the second floor of  The Union Hall in Missoula, unless otherwise noted in the calendar.  Summer dances in June, July, August will be held on the third Saturday only at Shy Bear Farm's Dance Pavilion. There is a beginner's (or newcomer's) workshop at 7:30 p.m. and dancing from 8:00 to 11:00 p.m.  Cost is $6 for MFS members and students and $9 for all others

The Missoula Folklore Society co-sponsors occassional dances with the University of Montana Folklore Society.
The UM Folklore Society's faculty advisor is Vicki Watson who can be reached at 406-243-5153.

What is Contra Dancing? Contra Dancing evolved from English Country Dancing. Couples form long parallel lines and dance a series of figures. All dances are taught from scratch. It is fun, great exercise, and easy to learn. Check out this article about contra dancing to learn more.
